Learn the cello.
Unlock Your Sound.
Expand Your Musical World.
Hello! My name is Natalie, and I am excited to teach you and/or your child the cello. My studio is located in Queen Anne, Seattle.
Looking for a more creative approach to learning music? I employ improvisation along with classical techniques to help each student develop confidence, versatility, and a lifelong connection to music.
Learning cello with improvisation and creativity!
One of the greatest joys of playing the cello is its incredible versatility. This instrument isn’t just for classical music; it shines in bluegrass, pop and rock, film and video game scores, and even electronic music. The cello can go anywhere your imagination takes it.
Not every musical genre lives on a page. By blending classical training with ear training and improvisation, students learn to make music confidently in any setting - whether or not sheet music is provided. The goal is adaptability, curiosity, and musical independence.
Students are encouraged to think of the cello as their own voice. That means experimenting, expressing emotions, and connecting with others through music: jamming with friends or family, exploring new genres, improvising, and even writing original music. This flexible, creative approach keeps students engaged, motivated, and excited to grow.
All Ages. All Levels.
All Welcome.
You don’t have to be a child to learn the cello—adults are also welcome and encouraged! The cello is a fantastic instrument for anyone interested in exploring multiple styles. You can play Bach for your dinner guests one day and jump into your friend’s band the next.
Whether you’re brand new, returning to the instrument, or looking to grow, lessons meet you where you are.
What Lessons Look Like:
Every lesson is customized around the student’s goals and includes three core elements:
Technique - Right and left-hand exercises, scales, and etudes to build strength, ease, and control.
Repertoire - A longer-term focus on a piece to develop musicianship and depth.
Creative Playing - Improvisation, songwriting, musical exploration, and personal expression.
Studio Location: My home in Queen Anne, Seattle
Lesson Length and Frequency: Typically 1 hour once a week. Younger students may only need 30-45 minutes, while more involved sessions may require 90-minute lessons.
Lessons are traditionally one-on-one, but group lessons and ensemble coaching are available upon request.
Consistency is the Secret Sauce!!
Learning the cello combines ear training, music reading, and physical coordination; so steady progress comes from consistent practice. Regular practice helps the brain absorb information and turn new skills into habits.
Whether a student practices 10-15 minutes a day or a couple of hours, what matters most is focus and consistency. Short, daily sessions are far more effective than long, infrequent sessions.
Music and the Brain
Playing the cello is truly a full-brain workout. Music strengthens memory, focus, and problem-solving skills, while the athletic side of playing builds coordination, dexterity, and fine motor control. Creating music also supports emotional well-being—reducing stress, boosting mood, and encouraging healthy self-expression.
In short, learning the cello is really good for you!
I’d love to support you and/or your child on this musical journey. Studying the cello opens the door to lifelong creativity, confidence, and meaningful connections with others. Providing benefits, skills, and experiences that reach far beyond music.
